Alshaya and MGRP's 9th Summer Internship has major impact on young Kuwaitis' lives
More than 100 Kuwaiti school and university students this week celebrated their graduation from retailer M. H. Alshaya's popular Summer Internship programme, taking with them five weeks of skills, experience and new career options in the retail industry.
Run in partnership with Kuwait's Manpower and Government Restructuring Programme (MGRP), the Summer Internship gives Kuwaiti students the chance to work in one of Alshaya's stores, cafes or restaurants for a month, offering a valuable hands-on learning and development experience for students who want to explore a career in retail.
Speaking at the graduation ceremony at Alshaya's head office, Mr Tareq Alkandari, Supervisor of Student Training Department at the MGRP, said the programme had a major positive impact on the students' lives.
"It is great to see how much the students have matured over the last five weeks. They themselves noticed that their sense of responsibility has improved immensely. They are also very happy with the skills and experience they have gained while working at Alshaya's many stores," said Mr Alkandari.
Jassim Alhassawi, Training Manager at Alshaya Human Resources Department, said the Summer Internship programme was an integral part of the company's commitment to providing career opportunities and jobs for Kuwaiti nationals.
"We are fully committed to the improvement and development of our Kuwaiti youth. We've been running this programme with MGRP for nine years now, and it is growing from strength to strength. We invest in our youth today because they are the leaders of our future, and we want to provide them with some of the retail skills and experience that will help them in their future careers," said Mr Alhassawi.
During their time in the stores, interns are introduced to the essential concepts behind running and managing a store. The training includes coaching in sales, promotions, customer service, merchandising and stock management. Ultimately, the programme aims to provide participants with a full understanding of the jobs and career opportunities available in the retail industry, including the qualifications, competencies and skills necessary for a career in retail.
